With 219,000 Australians living with Parkinson’s, Lifeview is proud to support Parkinson’s Awareness Month this April.
Despite being Australia’s second most common neurological condition, Parkinson’s is still one of the least understood.
It is not known exactly what causes it, and treatment is limited to managing symptoms rather than slowing or stopping the disease.
Diagnosis is also challenging. With a wide range of possible symptoms, doctors often rule out other conditions first.
While Parkinson’s is typically associated with older age, one-in-five people are diagnosed before 50, and research shows the number of cases is rapidly increasing both locally and globally.
The impacts of Parkinson’s on the Australian economy and healthcare system are over $10 billion each year.
Early signs of Parkinson’s may include tremors, slowed movement, or subtle changes in handwriting. But we now know symptoms like constipation, mood shifts, loss of smell, and acting out dreams can appear years before motor changes are noticed.
Parkinson’s is progressive, meaning symptoms worsen over time.
There’s no cure, and while medication can help regulate dopamine, a brain chemical linked to the disease, it doesn’t stop progression.
The way Parkinson’s presents can also change day to day, and from person to person.
Still, there is hope.
A growing body of research is uncovering new insights into how to manage Parkinson’s, and Lifeview is committed to bringing those breakthroughs into daily care.
Lifeview offers tailored and evidence-based support; from on-site allied health professionals to chefs preparing meals that support digestive and brain health.
