Following the success of their first ever Art Exhibition residents of Lifeview Argyle Court have decided to make the exhibition an annual event.

Held on Friday 11 November, the Chelsea aged care home’s Art Exhibition was the culmination of months of art classes, run every weekend.

Residents have embraced the classes wholeheartedly, which are run by social support assistant Alison, to the point where some are ready and waiting to start up to 45 minutes before the scheduled time. Once in the class residents immerse themselves in a number of creative mediums resulting in some stunning art works.

A large crowd of family, friends, staff and special guests attended the evening, which started with a special welcome from resident and recent “The Project” star Jo Hester.  Jo spoke of the joy the art classes had brought her and other residents as well as how the classes have captivated their imagination and creative side.

“We simply love these classes and cannot wait for them to start.  We could stay here all day engrossed in this creative world”, Mrs. Hester said.

Guest speaker Norelle Sensche of Alzheimer’s Australia Vic also addressed the attendees, discussing the benefits of art for those living with dementia.

Art can provide an alternative language for communication through images, symbols and colours. It brings interest and opportunity for self-expression into the lives of some people living with dementia who may have lost the ability to initiate activities.

“It was an amazing evening and the residents were very proud to show the wider community what they had achieved.  Ensuring residents are meaningfully engaged in past-times which focus on their abilities and interests is very important to everyone at Lifeview”, Residential Manager Katy Cavanagh added.

The majority of works on display were sold on the evening, with all funds raised going towards extending the program and the purchase of new materials.
